ABOUT US
Our lead illustrator, Stefan James, has been in the patent field for over 20 years. His unique patent illustration style–characterized by simplicity and boldness–has attracted the attention of several of the largest patent filers in the world.
As a former engineer and registered patent lawyer with a love for design, Stefan understands the challenges of patent professionals. He lives in Michigan with his husband, children, and dogs.
How is PATNHAUS different?
PATNHAUS is a patent illustration studio focused on reducing editing iterations. Led by a former engineer and licensed patent attorney, we understand both the technology and the nuances of patent application requirements. This expertise allows us to minimize unnecessary revisions, saving patent lawyers valuable time.
In addition to providing patent drawings ready for filing, we offer editable templates, further reducing back-and-forth. Our services address the common frustration of patent lawyers spending too much time on revisions with their draftsperson.
What kinds of templates can you provide?
If you have an image that you like to reuse in your patent applications, we can provide you with a version that (1) omits the lead lines and element numbers, (2) omits the element numbers (keeps the lead lines), or (3) makes the element numbers/text editable using pdf software.
How much does it cost to get patent drawings?
With our name-your-price model, you decide how much you can pay for your patent drawings. If we can do our high quality work at your budget, we will accept your proposed pricing as a fixed fee.
How long will it take to get my patent drawings?
Similar to our pricing, tell us when you need the first draft of your patent drawings. If we can do our high quality work in that time, we will have the first draft ready on time.
Otherwise, we request that you allow at least 5 business days for the first draft of your patent drawings.
What informal drawings should I include in the proposal?
We recommend you submit informal drawings in pdf format showing as much detail as possible. Providing all necessary details and element numbers (if possible) up front will help us, particularly if you ask for a lower budget and/or expedited timeline.
For most design patent requests, we require 7 views – top, bottom, front, back, left, right, and perspective/isometric.
Where are you located?
Everyone on our team is located in the United States (Michigan). We mostly work with US-based law firms and companies. If you are located outside the United States, please consider any applicable export restrictions before sending us your patent drawings.
Who are your clients?
We prepare patent drawings for corporations and law firms. We are typically hired directly by law firms or in-house patent attorneys / patent agents who draft their own patent applications. Sometimes, corporations direct outside counsel to use our services.
How do I pay?
We accept payment via credit card or direct deposit. For established clients, we will send an invoice for the patent drawings with the final version. For new clients, we may ask that you prepay for our services until we have an established business relationship.
What file formats will I receive?
Our standard practice is to provide a complete set of patent drawings as a single pdf file (8.5×11 or A4). We can provided other formats if needed.
How can I ensure you'll accept my proposal?
We are very serious about quality and precision. We also believe good work takes time.
We are more likely to accept proposals that give us the time and budget to prepare patent drawings to our high standards. You can see the types of budgets we typically accept here.
Finally, we do not miss deadlines. If we do not have capacity, regardless of the price you offer, we will unfortunately have to decline your offer.
What is included in the cost?
You will receive a set of drawings in pdf format. Each sheet will include crosshairs with black-and-white line drawings, element numbers, and lead lines in accordance with the informal figures you upload.
If you need a template, we’ll send that as well.
After you receive the first draft, we will do some revisions (i.e., revisions that are due to our error, adding element numbers, etc.) under the agreed upon price. The added cost for other revisions and/or new drawings will be consistent with our agreed-upon budget.
Can I get patent drawings done the same day?
If we have capacity, we will accept projects with a request for same-day completion.
If you need drawings completed the same day, please submit your request before 12pm ET, and please propose a budget that reflects the imposition on our staff and the urgency of your request.
Do I have to fill out that form every time I want to request patent drawings?
Once we have an established relationship with you and/or your organization, we will gladly accept proposals via email.
Can only law firms or businesses hire you?
We typically only work with law firms and in-house patent lawyers / patent agents. We do not prepare patent drawings for individual inventors seeking to file patent applications without the use of licensed US patent counsel.
How do you ensure a high level of quality for patent drawings?
Our patent illustrators are highly trained and skilled with respect to patent drawing rules as set forth in the MPEP and with various vector graphics tools.
Our studio uses a thorough internal review process to ensure that all projects are completed to our standards while meeting your expectations, particularly with respect to your budget and timing requirements.
Are submissions of patent drawings kept confidential?
All submissions are deemed confidential. We will never use patent drawings prepared for one client for the benefit of another client, nor do we share informal or formal patent drawings with anyone outside our organization except for the client who requested the patent drawings.
We may reuse some stock images, however, as the basis for some patent drawings.
How can I contact you?
